Why Christians Can’t Just Do Whatever They Want

Ever wonder why some Christians seem to be running their own show, picking and choosing what parts of faith they want to follow? It’s a question that goes straight to the heart of what it means to live under God’s authority. The truth is, as believers, we’re not given a free pass to do as we please, and here’s why.

The Bible makes it clear that authority comes from God. Romans 13:1 states, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” This doesn’t just apply to governments; it extends to the spiritual realm. We each have a role to play in the body of Christ, and those roles are assigned by God, not self-proclaimed. Thinking we can just take on any role or assignment without God’s calling is not only prideful but also sets us up for failure.

Labeling ourselves with titles or roles God hasn’t given us is a form of disobedience. 1 Corinthians 12 speaks extensively about the different gifts and functions within the church, emphasizing that not everyone is an apostle, prophet, or teacher. Each of us is uniquely gifted and called to serve in specific ways. To step outside of that calling is to disregard God’s design and potentially disrupt the harmony of the church. Let’s stay humble, seek God’s guidance, and operate within the boundaries of His calling for our lives.
