Ever feel like the Christian life is a bit like climbing a mountain? You reach the summit of salvation, breathe a sigh of relief, but then realize there are still higher peaks to conquer? That’s because being “born again” is a glorious beginning, not the finish line. It’s the start of a lifelong journey of deliverance from sin, a process that requires constant vigilance and a reliance on God’s grace.

The Bible is clear: salvation is a free gift, received through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). We are justified, declared righteous in God’s eyes. However, our sanctification – the process of becoming more like Christ – is an ongoing work. Paul, in Romans 7, vividly describes this struggle, acknowledging the pull of sin even as he desires to do good. “For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing” (Romans 7:19). This tension is a common experience for believers. We are new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), but we still live in bodies susceptible to temptation.

So, how do we continue to pursue deliverance after being born again? First, we must acknowledge that sin is still a reality in our lives. Denial is a dangerous trap. Second, we need to actively engage in spiritual disciplines: prayer, Bible study, and fellowship with other believers. These practices strengthen our connection with God and equip us to resist temptation. Third, we must be willing to confess our sins and receive God’s forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Finally, we need to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to overcome sin and live a life that is pleasing to God. Continued deliverance isn’t about earning God’s favor; it’s about embracing the fullness of the new life He has given us, becoming more and more like Jesus every day.
