We rarely choose sin because we want destruction. We choose it because we’re desperate for comfort, control, or relief. But when we lose ourselves in it, we trade temporary pleasure for long-term pain – mentally, physically, and spiritually.

I know this intimately. My own struggle with alcoholism wasn’t just a season of excess—it opened the door to Hashimoto’s disease, deep fatigue, and a body breaking under chronic stress. What seemed like a way to numb became a source of sickness. And the spiritual toll ran even deeper.

Scripture is crystal clear: sin pulls us away from the heart of God.

“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you…” — Isaiah 59:2

When we indulge repeatedly in patterns outside God’s will, we begin to lose sight of him. And the further we drift, the more empty we feel. This spiritual separation creates a void that we often try to fill with more of what harms us whether that’s alcohol, sex, control, or other destructive comforts.

Sin distorts truth. It convinces us we’re beyond repair. It feeds shame, anxiety, and depression. And the enemy loves using that confusion to isolate us.

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” — Proverbs 14:12

When I drank to cope with stress, I told myself it was manageable, normal, even. But what started as a crutch became a cage. The mental weight of secrecy, guilt, and self-condemnation was unbearable.

Stress, addiction, and emotional dysfunction don’t stay trapped in the mind—they manifest physically. We see it in elevated cortisol, digestive issues, autoimmune disorders like Hashimoto’s, and heart disease.

“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” — Proverbs 3:7–8

God isn’t trying to restrict us with His commandments. He’s protecting us. His boundaries are not barriers, but shields.

Repentance isn’t shame, it’s freedom! Turning back to God brings restoration on every level. He doesn’t just offer forgiveness; He offers healing, clarity, and peace.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us…and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9

I won’t claim the road back is easy. But I will say this: the moment I surrendered and let God reclaim the pieces I’d scattered in sin, healing began. My body started recovering. My mind quieted. My spirit found peace again.

Ask yourself: What am I turning to in moments of stress, fear, or loneliness? Is it drawing me closer to God’s heart—or pulling me away?

We don’t heal by hiding. We heal by handing every broken part to the One who loves us most.
