For the longest time, I felt like I was missing the memo on spirituality. I desperately wanted to connect with God, to hear His guidance, but I was constantly questioning how I was supposed to receive it. Was I listening for a booming voice from the clouds? A sign written in the sky?

I assumed the divine communication channel was loud, obvious, and impossible to mistake. I’d sit in prayer or quiet moments, straining my spiritual ears for a thunderclap, and when nothing dramatic happened, I’d assume I was doing it wrong or, worse, that I wasn’t worthy of a reply.

But my journey eventually led me to a profound realization: I was listening for a roar when God often speaks in a whisper.

The most significant shift in my perspective happened when I stopped trying to manufacture a dramatic experience and simply started listening to my inner landscape. When the voice of God finally resonated within me, it wasn’t commanding or loud. It was instantly, undeniably calm.

It’s the sense of peace that settles over you when a difficult decision is actually the right one. It cuts through the noise of my anxiety and the demands of the world. It is the very definition of peaceful—a gentle, yet firm, clarity that doesn’t panic me or demand immediate action in a stressful way.

It’s subtle, consistent with the biblical description of a “still, small voice” (1 Kings 19:11-13). It doesn’t scream; it reassures. It guides me toward quiet confidence rather than frantic energy. If you’re feeling stressed or anxious, that’s usually my own fear talking, not the divine voice of guidance.

The paradox of this experience is fascinating. While God’s voice is light and peaceful, His presence is an entirely different encounter.

When I truly feel in the presence of God, or when I sense His glory, it is heavy.

Not heavy in a negative or oppressive way—but heavy with power, awe, and an overwhelming sanctity. It is a profound, weighty sense of reality and majesty that makes you realize the sheer scale of the Creator.

Our physical bodies, in their finite nature, simply struggle to contain or fully process that immense glory. It’s a humbling, awe-inspiring weight that leaves me feeling small, reverent, and completely loved all at the same time. This is why, in many scriptural accounts, people fall to their knees or are physically overcome when confronted with the unfiltered glory of the Divine.

The gentleness of the voice and the weight of the presence work in harmony, demonstrating both the accessible love and the immense power of the Divine.

If you are where I used to be—questioning how to hear anything at all—here are a few things that helped me tune into that calm, peaceful voice:

  1. Read the Word of God: The Bible is a primary way God has already communicated with humanity. His written word provides the context and framework for understanding the unique, internal ways He speaks to you personally.
  2. Seek the Quiet: We can’t hear a whisper in a storm. Dedicate time every day to simply sit in silence, without agenda.
  3. Practice Intentional Listening: Pray less about what you want and more about simply being present and receptive to guidance.
  4. Trust the Peace: Discernment is a practice. That feeling of inner peace? Trust that as your compass.

Your desire to hear God is the beginning of the conversation. Keep listening for the whisper, and lean into the beautiful, weighty reality of his presence.
